I have enjoyed a lot making this cocktail at home because it is pretty easy. I didn’t need to buy any ingredient to make it. The main ingredient in a Bloody Mary is the tomato juice, you can buy it or make it yourself with ripe tomatoes as I did. Traditionally this cocktail has Worcestershire Sauce, an English sauce with a slightly vinegar touch, it can be substituted for Perrins sauce that is usually easier to find. The other key ingredient for a delicious Bloody Mary is a few drops of Tabasco, but be careful don’t to add too much!
The combination of flavours works and it is the most refreshing drink I have tried this Summer. It is a surprising cocktail worth to try, besides this recipe is easy and quick to make.
Since 1921 when this cocktail was tasted for the first time at the New York Bar in Paris many different version have been created. I would say there are not two Bloody Mary that taste exact same. Cow broth or nothing? Celery steam or not? Worcestershire Sauce or Perrins Sauce? These are only some of the questions we could discuss but I think we should make it the way we like it. I prefer it with homemade tomato juice and I don’t add Worcestershire sauce.
To make a vegan Bloody Mary leave out Worcestershire Sauce and Perrins Sauce, both are made with fish, but it won’t change much the taste of your Bloody Mary.

- 1 big ripe tomatoe or 300ml tomato juice
- 60 ml vodka
- 2 Tbsp lemon juice
- 6 drops of Perrins sauce, more to taste
- 3 drops of Tabasco, more to taste
- celery stalk for decoration (optional)
You can buy tomato juice or make it yourself as I did. Place the tomato without seeds or liquid into a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth and strain with a colander. I also added 2 Tbsp of tomato puree but just to add a bit more red colour.
Then stir in the vodka, lemon juice, perrins sauce, tabasco, salt and pepper. Taste and adjust to your preference. Serve with lots of ice and a celery stalk or a lemon wedge.
